Tirana Agro Fair – October 2024

Eni Koco

Tirana Agro fair day visit. Returning to our farming roots has always been a passion of mine, particularly focusing on traditional and heritage products and their processing. While traveling through Albania, I make it a point to discover new farms and meet people who are returning to their lands. This journey is a lengthy one, but we are making steady progress. After the suppression of local and family traditions during the communist era and the subsequent post-communism turmoil, we are gradually rediscovering our path back to farming and tradition.

October brings the season of harvest, where we gather the fruits of our labor amidst the falling leaves. This year, I was thrilled to see a significant number of stands where farmers showcased their products. The variety, improved packaging, and labeling were impressive, and I purchased a few items to test their quality. I noticed stands from all over Albania, even from small and remote villages, where farmers proudly explained their products and preparation processes.

The wine industry is making a remarkable comeback in one of the oldest production regions. Albanian wines are winning international awards, and we are reviving unique grape varieties that are native to our country.

Our age-old tradition of pickling various vegetables is still alive, and winter calls for a good stock of these pickles in our homes.

We are also developing a niche industry around Gliko, a traditional sweet preserve made from fruits and vegetables. Dried fruits and vegetables, prepared traditionally, play a significant role in our cuisine.

Albania is abundant in herbs, and we are a major exporter of sage, lavender, rosemary, and more.

Lastly, our beekeeping tradition is experiencing a revival. Today, I saw special honeys made from chestnuts, sage, linden, and other sources, each with unique curative properties.

Albania’s unique climate and terrain provide us with the potential to excel in farming and food production. I am hopeful that we are on the right track to revive and elevate our agricultural roots, enabling us to compete proudly with the best in the world.
